The commonwealth has released the results for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). The purpose of the exam is to measure student performance and tests grades 3 through 8 and grade 10.
Masslive.com recently reported that three western Massachusetts elementary schools were recognized as commendation schools for high performance or marked improvements: Sunderland Elementary, Granby’s East Meadow School, and Brimfield Elementary.
Here are some highlights regarding the top performers among Pioneer Valley schools, according to rankings compiled by Boston.com.
Tenth grade rankings:
Longmeadow did well tying for 17th in English out of the state’s 351 cities and towns. The town’s science and math scores ranked 38th and 44th, respectively.
Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School in Hadley tied for 36th ranked spot in English and 47th in science.
Hadley’s Hopkins Academy ranked 56th in English, 89th in math, and 31st in science.
Sharing the 56th ranked spot for English was Belchertown High School. Belchertown also tied Hadley in math with a ranking of 89th.
Tenth-graders in the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, or Minnechaug Regional High School, and Hampshire Regional High School tied in their math score ranking sharing 77th place. Hampden-Wilbraham out-performed Hampshire Regional in English with 56th and 121st rankings, respectively; but Hampshire Regional outperformed Hampden-Wilbraham in science with rankings of 63rd and 94th, respectively.
Amherst Regional High School ranked high in science with a ranking of 31st, but ranked 158th in English and 102nd in math.
Lower grade notable rankings:
Third graders at Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley ranked 2nd in reading and 6th in math. Pelham Elementary School third graders also did well with a ranking of 13th in math and 35th in English.
Fourth graders in Sunderland ranked 3rd in math and 7th in English.
Fifth graders at Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School ranked 3rd in math. At New Salem-Wendell, fifth-graders ranked 8th. In science, New Salem-Wendell and Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion ranked 1st, while Pelham Elementary ranked 5th and Hatfield ranked 35th.
New Salem-Wendell’s School District sixth-graders also performed well with a 3rd place ranking in math and a 6th place ranking in English.
Seventh-graders at Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion ranked 15th in math and 1st in English.
Amherst Regional High School ranked 34th among eighth-grade science scores and Longmeadow ranked 60th.
